Well, she did it. My beautiful wife has given me the most perfect daughter anyone could ever ask for. Alba Rose Butler was born on the 22nd August 2016, weighing a healthy 8lb 4oz and we couldn’t be happier. Her big brother is besotted!
After she was born and we finally had the chance to sit sat down, we got to talking with my Mother-in-law and she asked the “So, where did the name come from then?” question. We told her why we came up with it, but then we then Googled it to find out more.
At this point, I guess I need to confess. She is actually called Alba because we like the name of the little girl in the film - The Time Travellers Wife, starring Rachel McAdams. Sorry!
We Googled away and to our surprise it turns out that Alba is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland – Scotland being the home of Scotch of course. Who knew!
Could this have been my unconscious obsession?
Even stranger is the fact that we didn’t know the babies sex and had to choose a name we agreed on for a boy and a girl.
So naturally the conversation developed to what our boys name would have been and we said, “Cooper Jack Butler”. We explained why and that I like the film (a theme developing here) - Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey. He plays the main character ‘Coop’. We both liked the name and would have been happy to call our son Cooper – thinking he would have become ‘Coop’ to us.
Whilst we Googled the history of Alba, we looked into the history of Cooper too. And to our surprise a Cooper is a maker or repairer of casks and barrels - casks and barrels obviously being crucial in the production of whiskey.
Mind Blown! Our two favourite names relate in some way to my passion with whisky. Does this confirm my unconscious obsession? I don’t know for sure but interesting I think.
Anyway, now you know. Welcome to the world Alba Rose Butler.
